Wrapped Labradorite hinge bracelet
Labradorite and aged copper, to me, somehow imparts an Old-World mystical sensation that seems to hold some deeper meaning. I've long admired this combination in wire wrapped jewelry--especially when it features an exceptionally nice stone.
The play of color in this labradorite cabochon is great from several angles. Almost straight on reveals a strong flash of intense green. Its "labradorescence" (see below) ranges from yellow-green to blue-green, with even a small flash of golden-brown found near the top of this teardrop shaped gemstone. It exhibits a moody dark green-blue-gray when not reflecting this schiller optical phenomena. This labradorite stone is polished to a high shine, but contains some minor surface cracks and tiny voids which are barely noticeable.
I securely anchored this gem into my hand forged heavy duty hinged copper bangle and wrapped it in an attractive manner that will protect the stone from most of the bangs and bumps of daily wear, however labradorite stones may cleave or scratch if treated roughly.
This bracelet is on the smaller size and will comfortably fit wrists up to size 6 and 3/4 inch circumference. The underside of the bracelet is finished flat and smooth, with all wire ends cut flush, tucked, filed, and polished to prevent scratching and snagging.
This gemstone can display an iridescent optical effect (or schiller) known as labradorescence. Labradorescence is not a display of colors reflected from the surface of a specimen. Instead, light enters the stone, strikes a twinning surface within the stone, and reflects from it. The color seen by the observer is the color of light reflected from that twinning surface. Different twinning surfaces within the stone reflect different colors of light. Light reflecting from different twinning surfaces in various parts of the stone can give the stone a multi-colored appearance. Diffraction combined with interference give rise to dramatic color blocks, which may shift with viewing angle.
From a metaphysical perspective, Labradorite is said to have mystical properties that may enhance intuition and bring deeper spiritual consciousness.
